Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.

Flip bread slices and spread pizza sauce on the unbuttered sides of two slices.

Evenly layer mozzarella cheese and pepperoni slices over the sauced sides. Add any desired optional toppings at this stage.

Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out. Sprinkle Italian seasoning over the exposed bread surfaces.

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread is golden brown and cheese is fully melted.
