02 - 1 medium onion, finely chopped
03 - 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
04 - 3 garlic cloves, minced
05 - 2 (15 oz) cans black beans, drained, rinsed, and patted dry
06 - 1 large egg
07 - 3/4 cup breadcrumbs (can use gluten-free breadcrumbs)

08 - 1 chipotle chile in adobo sauce, diced plus 1 tablespoon of sauce
09 - 1 teaspoon ground cumin
10 - 1 teaspoon chili powder
11 - 1 teaspoon salt
12 - 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
13 - 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
14 - 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro

→ For Serving

15 - 6 hamburger buns, toasted
16 - Toppings: cheese, lettuce, tomato, sliced red onion, avocado, pickles, etc.

# Instructions:

01 - Heat oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and red bell pepper, cooking for about 4 minutes until tender. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Transfer to a plate and let cool to room temperature. Blot excess moisture with a paper towel.
02 - In a large bowl, mash black beans until mostly broken up with a few whole beans remaining for texture. Stir in the cooled vegetables (onion, pepper, and garlic).
03 - Mix in the egg, breadcrumbs, chipotle chili, adobo sauce, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and cilantro until well combined.
04 - Divide the mixture into 6 even portions and shape into 3/4-inch thick burger patties. Press firmly to ensure they're compact, which helps prevent them from falling apart during cooking.
05 - Preheat the skillet over medium heat. Add 1-2 tablespoons oil and cook patties for 6-8 minutes per side until browned and the centers are set. If they're browning too quickly, reduce the heat. Cook in batches (about 3 at a time) to avoid overcrowding.
06 - Oven: Place patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 20 minutes, flipping halfway. Air Fryer: Cook at 375°F for 12 minutes, flipping halfway, until crispy and cooked through.
07 - Place black bean burgers on toasted buns and add your favorite toppings like cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, or pickles. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

# Notes:

01 - For the best texture, make sure to pat the black beans dry after rinsing to remove excess moisture.
02 - These patties can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before cooking.
03 - Cooked patties freeze well for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen in a 350°F oven for about 15 minutes.
